CYRUS MEJÍA
Retablos are portable shrines that became popular with indigenous people after the Spanish conquest of Latin America. These Retablos reflect my own ideas about spirituality and the sacredness of the Earth. Traditionally Retablos are depictions of religious scenes often honoring saints of the Catholic Church. They are painted on wood, and sometimes carved. By using the iconic house-shape of traditional Retablos combined with my own images I’m asking the viewer to expand their horizons and think about how spiritually and physically; all things are connected.
